The number of NPE patent infringement lawsuits in the USA has grown significantly in recent years, as has their fraction of the total. In 2008, for the first time, NPE patent lawsuits exceeded 350 lawsuits, or over 12% of all patent lawsuits.

NPE lawsuits have become a large and ever increasing cost for businesses. They are a a large source of risk. Companies, especially in the high tech sector, need new approaches to deal with this issue
